Your Phone Will See More Than You Do
Most aurora photography advice written for phones is really advice for iPhones. If you are standing in a car park in Iceland at midnight holding a Samsung Galaxy or a Google Pixel, almost none of it maps onto the menus in front of you. Android handles long exposures through a completely different mechanism, and the good news is that in some situations it handles them better.
Start with the right expectation. As we cover in our honest guide to what the northern lights actually look like to the naked eye, a moderate aurora reads as a pale grey or silvery band to your eye, because your low-light rod vision cannot register colour. Your phone’s sensor has no such limitation. It collects photons for 10 or 15 seconds and shows vivid green. Neither image is fake — the camera simply has a longer memory than your retina. Knowing this in advance stops the crushing “is that it?” moment that ruins a lot of first nights out.
Samsung Galaxy: Use Pro Mode, Not Night Mode
Night Mode on a Galaxy is tuned for city streets. It will brighten the foreground, smear the aurora, and hand you a muddy frame. Go to More → Pro in the camera app instead, and set these manually:
- ISO 800–1600. Start at 1600 on a faint display and drop toward 800 as the aurora strengthens. Above 3200 the noise reduction starts erasing the fainter structure in the bands.
- Shutter 8–15 seconds. Pro Mode goes to 30 seconds on flagship models, but do not use it for aurora. A bright, fast-moving display crossing the sky will blur into a flat green wash at 30 seconds. Ten seconds keeps the vertical rays sharp.
- Focus: manual, dragged all the way to the mountain icon. Autofocus hunts endlessly in the dark and frequently gives up mid-shot. Set it once and do not touch it again.
- White balance around 3500–4000K. Leave it on auto and the phone will fight you, shifting colour between consecutive frames.
If your Galaxy has the free Expert RAW app from the Galaxy Store, install it before your trip. It gives you proper RAW files with far more recoverable shadow detail, plus a dedicated astrophoto mode on newer models.
Google Pixel: Astrophotography Mode, With One Caveat
Pixel owners have the single best phone tool for this — but it comes with a trap nobody mentions.
Open the camera, switch to Night Sight, and hold the phone completely still on a tripod. When the phone detects it is genuinely motionless and the scene is dark enough, the shutter button changes to read Astrophotography and offers an exposure of up to four minutes. Under the hood it captures a burst of roughly 15-second frames and stacks them, which produces astonishingly clean, low-noise results.
The caveat: stacking assumes the sky is not moving. That is true for stars. It is emphatically not true for an active aurora. If the display is dancing, a four-minute stack will average all that motion into a formless green smudge. So:
- Faint, slow, static arc — let Astrophotography mode run the full four minutes. It will pull out colour your eye cannot see at all.
- Bright, active, rippling display — cancel it. Tap the exposure timer down to the shortest option, or use a manual camera app at 5–8 seconds to freeze the structure.
The Cold Is a Bigger Problem Than the Settings
At -5°C on an exposed Icelandic coastline, a fully charged phone can drop 40–50% of its battery in half an hour. Android handles this slightly worse than iOS, because many Galaxy and Pixel models will throttle the camera app entirely once the battery gets cold rather than simply shutting down.
Three things matter more than any ISO value:
- Keep the phone inside your jacket between shots. Body heat is the fix. Take it out, shoot, put it back.
- Bring a power bank and keep that warm too. A cold power bank will not deliver current.
- Bring a tripod and a small clamp mount. Every setting above depends on the phone being genuinely still. Propping it on a rock does not work in Icelandic wind. If you own nothing else, a cheap flexible tripod in your coat pocket is the highest-value item on our winter packing list.
Also, wear thin liner gloves under your main gloves. Capacitive touchscreens do not respond through thick wool, and you will not want to take bare hands out at -8°C to drag a focus slider.
Where to Actually Point It
Settings only matter if you are somewhere dark with clear sky overhead. Two easy starting points near Reykjavík: Grótta Lighthouse, which is a 15-minute drive from the city centre and gives you a clean northern horizon over the sea, and Þingvellir National Park, about 45 minutes out, which is properly dark and gives you rock formations and water for foreground interest.
Compose with something in the frame besides sky. A lighthouse, a rift wall, a parked car — anything that gives the picture scale. A photograph of pure green sky looks far less impressive than what you actually witnessed.
